Black History Month 2016

The last two weeks at KAA have been spent celebrating Black History Month through assemblies, displays, morning reading, PSHE and a very special Black History Month house competition. There have been some fantastic conversations between students surrounding some of the issues raised.

The House Competition required students to create a poster about an inspirational black person or create a small project on their own family history and how they ended up in Ladbroke Grove. We had some fantastic entries including an outstanding project by Leah (9 Simmons) who interviewed her grandmother. The winner of this competition will be announced shortly, with house points up for grabs!

Staff joined in by choosing a black hero and displaying their name and a quote on their classroom door. This generated a lot of interesting conversations with students about ways to empower and inspire themselves. See the picture below for some examples of our black heroes!

Mr Miller’s favourite quote of the month was from a student who said ‘you taught me so much about my own culture that I didn’t know’. Many thanks to Mr Miller and his team for organising the array of activities for such a successful Black History Month.
