KAA celebrates British Science Week

Our science department hosted a whole range of activities for students from years 7 to 13 to celebrate British Science and add to this section of their Intrepidus Passports, spanning a fortnight (instead of a week!) from Monday 3rd March to Friday 14th March 2025.

All students in year 8 enjoyed an inflatable planetarium set up in the dance studio for a truly interactive learning experience on Monday 3rd March. It was a great STEM experience for our budding scientists looking at astrophysics and space travel! Next, some of our year 9s enjoyed a trip to Legoland on Friday 7th March – at the park they participated in a workshop exploring the difference forms of energy used in a rollercoaster’s journey, before creating their own tracks to put what they’d learned to the test! Our entire year 7 cohort then visited the Natural History Museum on Monday 10th March. Whilst at the museum, students explored exhibits on natural history and the dinosaurs, and completed a treasue hunt activity around the museum.

Throughout British Science Week our science department ran a range of interim competitions for students to test their science skills. This included quizzes, treasure hunts and dissection competitions. Congratulations to Honeyball who won overall across all of the KS3 interim house competitions for British Science Week, winning 5,000 house points!

On Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th March, our KS4 and KS5 biologists tried their hand at our lamb’s head dissection challenge. Students in years 10 to 13 were tasked with quickly and carefully dissecting as many parts as possible, including tongues, brains and eyes! All students who took part did an incredible job. Well done to our winners Franklin, collecting the 5,000 points for this interim competition!

There was plenty for our sixth form students to get involved in too. Our Medicine Society (MedSoc) members in sixth form participated in a debate, arguing the motion “This house believes that vaccinations should be a legal obligation for everyone in the UK.” Students prepared incredibly well and impressed our judges, presenting thoughtful and well researched arguments on both sides, also collecting “STEM” stamps for their Intrepidus Passport. On Thursday 13th March our Year 12s attended a STEM panel in their careers series lecture, as part of the British Science Week celebrations. Our students impressed with their mature questions in the Q&A and really enjoyed the panel, adding to both their “STEM” and “Future Aspirations” sections of their Intrepidus Passport.

A huge thanks to Ms Speakman and the entire science department for hosting such a fantastic week of events for our students!
