Black History Month 2017

As October comes to a close we wanted to share some of the Black History Month activities our students have taken part in at KAA this month.
Over the two weeks there were a number of great discussions in form time about Black History, especially during PSHE. Teachers displayed their black heroes on their classroom and office doors, allowing staff and students to have enriching conversations about different influential figures. During break and lunch times students completed a black history month treasure hunt and the film club celebrated Black History Month each week throughout the month. Finally, there were some fantastic entries in the Black History interim competition, notably from Parisa, Salvina and Samarah who demonstrated creativity in their posters.
It was amazing to see how Black History Month was approached throughout the school across different subject areas and faculties. For example, Mr Edwards planned a very creative maths lesson about the contribution to maths by people of African origin, which really hit the nail on the head when looking at the main objectives of Black History Month. We also had a visit from GCSE anthology poet John Agard which was enjoyed by students across KS3 and KS5. Agard donated some signed books to the library which will be given to Black History Month competition winners!
Thank you to all those involved in running Black History Month events, particularly Mr Miller for his organisation of the whole timetable.
