Death of Mick May OBE, KAA Chair 2015-2021
by Vashti Turner on March 14, 2022 in Academy News
We are devastated to announce the passing of our former Chair of Governors, Mick May. Mick died on Monday 7th March at home with his wife and children. His passing was peaceful, after a long illness.
In his six years at KAA, Mick had a huge impact on the growth and success of our school. Almost every area of school life was influenced by Mick in some way. When he took over in 2015 KAA was still a young, growing school. He used his experience in the finance and charity sector to help us navigate the challenges of growth, and secure our “Outstanding” Ofsted judgement.
Throughout the Grenfell Fire tragedy, Mick was a mainstay of the school’s response. He based himself in the academy for many weeks and provided skilful support to the school staff and leaders who needed it most. Without his strength and compassion behind the scenes, it would have been much harder for us to hold our school community together, in the way we were eventually able to.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mick’s family at this time. We share with them a sense of great loss and sadness now that Mick is no longer with us. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have known Mick for as long as we did, and were fortunate to have him lead us for six successful years. His legacy can be seen in the culture of the school today, and the strong governance and leadership processes he left behind.
Rest in peace Mick, and much love from all in the KAA community.
